Things to do in Cumbria with Wigwam Holidays
The Lake District
There’s no way you can go glamping in Cumbria and avoid the Lake District. England with its grasslands, rugged fells, moorlands, spectacular mountains and forests - not to mention over 19 glittering lakes - for which the area's famous. The area gets incredibly busy and holiday accommodation is at a premium all year round. If you want to go glamping in the Lake District, we suggest booking into one of our Wigwam Holidays Cumbrian sites - close enough to the Lake District action, but just-far-enough-away to avoid the crowds and tourists.
The Lake District National Park is less than 40 minutes drive from Wigwam Holidays Brampton and is the perfect base for a glamping break near the Lakes.
Kendal Calling Music Festival
Every summer in Lowther Deer Park in Kendal the air is filled with music for a whole weekend. With international, national and local bands, DJs and lots more besides, it’s a wonderful celebration of good times, good music and good food.
If you’re heading to Kendal Calling but want to avoid the noisy festival camping then book into Wigwam Holidays Brampton - it’s a short 40-minute drive from the festival and a world away from the noise and crowds. The perfect way to enjoy a festival don’t you think?
Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway
Sightseeing at its very best. Hop on, sit back and enjoy the scenery rolling by from the comfort of your carriage. It’s a wonderful way to explore the countryside and they host loads of events throughout the year ranging from fish and chips trains, superheroes and villains events, magical stations and seasonal events at Halloween and Christmas. There really is something for everyone - you don’t have to be a trainspotter to enjoy.
City of Carlisle
This wonderful small city is steeped in history and it is packed with places of historical interest. Carlisle’s Historic Quarter has dungeons, labyrinths, museums and ruins to explore. Carlisle Castle provides a fascinating look into the last 900 years of Carlisle life and Carlisle Cathedral is a beautiful medieval cathedral with guided tours to help you negotiate its history and architecture. If history isn’t your thing, then the city has lots of other distractions. Carlisle is a city of surprises and there are always gems to discover. If you fancy a spot of vinyl shopping, head to the Vinyl cafe for a unique experience, or poke around the Cumbria Curiosity Shop to pick up some unusual nick-nacks.
You’ll find loads to keep you busy in Carlisle, and if shopping and sightseeing aren’t enough, then we always recommend whiling away some time in the local pubs and taverns which proudly sell locally brewed ales and spirits.

Solway Wetlands
Archaeology, wildlife, bike tracks and heritage all rolled into one in this stunning area of Cumbria. The area takes in a variety of walks - along nature trails and specially built boardwalks which allow exploration of bogs and peatlands. Start the adventure at the RSPB Campfield Marsh Reserve or the Solway Wetlands Centre - you’ll be inspired by lots of different walks and activities as soon as you arrive. An amazing day out for all nature lovers.
Hadrian’s Wall and Birdoswald Roman Fort
A fascinating window into England’s Roman history Birdoswald Roman Fort gives you a real insight into Hadrian’s Wall, with a periscope offering a view of the wall as far as you can see. The visitor centre plays host to an exhibition and you can learn how the wall was constructed and explore Roman artefacts. This is the place to start your Hadrian’s Wall adventure - you’ll be glad you did.
Alpacaly Ever After
If you’ve always dreamed of taking cuddly, friendly Alpacas out for a walk along the beautiful (private) walkways around Derwent Water in the Lingholme Estate then now is your chance. Dating back to the 1300s this impressive historic house is home to Lord Inglewood and his family. It’s easy to spend the day strolling through the beautiful grounds - on guided walks and tours, or exploring under your own steam.
